CLPLus Project Website

A two-year award to continue and expand the Building Communities that Support Children’s Reading (BCSCR) project. CLPlus will support improvements in children’s literacy in Eastern Arizona, Southern Colorado, New Mexico, El Paso region of Texas, and southeast Utah.

Project components include

  • free out-of-school tutoring in reading,
  • book distribution and community libraries,
  • teacher professional development,
  • class sets of reading materials and instructional guides, and
  • community workshops.

Project Goals and Objectives

Goal: Provide critical support for literacy in low-socioeconomic communities to significantly improve children’s reading ability

Objectives:

  1. 80% of participating 4-year-old children will achieve significant gains in oral language skills (GPRA 1)
  2. 80% of participating 4th grade students will demonstrate student growth over the past year on State reading or language arts assessments (GPRA 2)
  3. 80% of participating 8th grade students will demonstrate student growth over the past year on State reading or language arts assessments (GPRA 3)
  4. 75% of participating schools will demonstrate an increased book-to-student ratio over the prior year (GPRA 4)
  5. 85% of participating children will receive at least one free grade- and language-appropriate book of their own (GPRA 5)
  6. The percentage of parents who report reading with their children at least 4 times per week will increase by 15 percentage points
  7. 65% of participating teachers will indicate improvements in their literacy instruction
  8. 65% of participating early childhood educators will indicate improvements in their literacy instruction
